Your first driving lesson: what happens and what to bring

Nervous about your first lesson? Most people are. Here’s exactly what to expect when you start with me, so there are no surprises.

Before your first lesson

  • Pass the driving theory test.
  • Get your learner permit for category B (cars).
  • If this is your first learner permit, you’ll need the 12 EDT lessons before your test. Your first lesson with me is EDT lesson 1.

What to bring

  • Your learner permit.
  • Your glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to drive.
  • Comfortable, flat shoes you can feel the pedals in.

What we do in the first lesson

EDT lesson 1 covers the car’s controls and safety checks. We start somewhere quiet, get your seat and mirrors right, and go through what everything does before you move off. My school car is a manual with dual controls, so I can step in if I need to. You won’t be thrown into busy traffic on day one.

Lessons are booked as two-hour sessions, €90, which gives us time to practise properly instead of rushing.

If you’re nervous

Tell me at the start what worries you, and that’s where we focus. Lisa was really nervous about the gearbox and told me changing gear was her biggest problem. Three lessons later it was almost second nature. She passed with no problem, and she enjoys driving today.

Pickup

Pickup is free within about 10 minutes’ drive of the test centres in Tallaght, Dún Laoghaire, Naas and Carlow. If you live farther away, send me your location on WhatsApp and I’ll tell you the cost before you book.
