Where the test centre is
The Dún Laoghaire test centre is at Highline Building, Baker’s Point, Pottery Road, Kill of the Grange, Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, A96 KW29. See my Dún Laoghaire test centre page for pre-test lessons and car hire there.
Busy junctions
Around Deansgrange, Kill Lane and Rochestown Avenue you meet traffic from several directions at once, with bus stops and turning lanes. Practise reading the junction early: which lane you need, who has priority and where to stop.
Hills and speed changes
Some junctions are on a slope, so your hill start and clutch control need to be steady. Limits also change as you move between main roads and residential areas, so keep scanning for signs.
Narrow roads and village streets
Closer to the coast, around Monkstown, Glasthule and Sandycove, roads get narrower, with parked cars, cyclists and pedestrians. Good positioning and patience matter more than speed here.
The manoeuvres
Reversing around a corner, the hill start and the turnabout. Practise them until they’re routine, with full observation all the way through, not just at the start.
Test day
A good way to start the day is my €150 option: a one-hour warm-up lesson just before the test, then you sit the test in my car. It settles nerves and you arrive already driving well. Car hire on its own is €120.
