Tallaght driving test: common mistakes and how to avoid them
Most people who fail in Tallaght don’t fail because they can’t drive. They fail on a handful of habits the examiner is watching for. These are the ones I see most, and how we fix them.

Where the test centre is
The Tallaght test centre is at Premier Business Park, 52 Broomhill Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24, D24 VE8E. The area around it mixes busy main roads, industrial estates, housing estates and roundabouts, so you need to be comfortable with all of them. More on the centre itself on my Tallaght test centre page.
1. Not looking properly at junctions
Pulling out after a quick glance is one of the easiest faults to pick up. Where parked cars, hedges or walls block your view, creep forward slowly until you can see, then decide. The examiner is watching your head move, not just your mirrors.
2. Wrong lane at roundabouts
Picking a lane late, drifting across lanes on the roundabout, or not signalling when you leave. We practise the approach until choosing your lane early becomes automatic: read the signs, check your mirrors, signal, then position.
3. Missing speed limit changes
Limits can change several times on one drive, and some estates and school areas are 30 km/h. Learners either miss the sign or creep over the limit. I train you to look for the signs as part of your normal scanning, not as an afterthought.
4. Being too hesitant
Over-caution is marked too. Waiting at a clear junction, or driving well under the limit when it’s safe to go, counts against you. Confidence comes from understanding why a gap is safe, which is exactly what we work on.
5. The manoeuvres and the car park
Reversing around a corner, the hill start and the turnabout feel very different with an examiner beside you. Touching the kerb or forgetting to look all around costs marks. The centre car park is also tight, so take your time with observation leaving and coming back in.
How I prepare you
In my experience, most people who fail simply didn’t prepare properly. They learned to get around, but nobody explained what the examiner looks for and why. I make sure you understand each check and each rule, so you can handle whatever route the examiner picks rather than memorising one.
Pre-test lessons are €45 an hour, booked as two-hour sessions (€90). On test day you can sit the test in my car for €120, or €150 with a one-hour warm-up lesson just before.
