  • What is Initial Basic Training (IBT)?
Initial Basic Training (IBT) is a legal requirement for all new motorcycle and scooter riders in Ireland. It teaches essential skills like bike control, road safety, and theory through structured modules. After completing IBT, you’re allowed to ride on public roads with a learner permit.
  • Where do I start if I want to ride a motorbike in Ireland?
Begin by applying for your motorcycle learner permit (AM, A1, A2, or A) on the NDLS website, after passing the motorcycle theory test. Then book your Initial Basic Training (IBT) with Raven Driving Training in Kinnegad or Tullamore. If you're unsure about any step, we're happy to guide you through the process.
  • How long does the motorcycle training take at Raven Driving Training?
The full Initial Basic Training (IBT) takes a minimum of 16 hours, split across four modules. This is usually completed over 2 days, but can vary based on your availability and learning pace. Additional courses like Pre-Test Preparation or Back to Riding are flexible and tailored to your needs – these sessions typically last 1 to 3 hours, depending on your skill level and goals. We’ll help you choose the best schedule to suit your experience and availability.
  • Do I need to own a motorbike to take part in training or pass the test?
No, you don’t need to own a motorbike. At Raven Driving Training, we provide bike rental for all training and test preparation. You’ll also receive all essential safety gear, so you can train without making a big upfront investment.
  • Is gear included in the training?
Yes. We supply helmets, jackets, gloves, and hi-vis vests at no extra cost. You can show up ready to learn, even if you don’t have any gear of your own.
  • What if I haven’t ridden in years?
Our Back to Riding course is designed just for you. It helps returning riders refresh their skills, regain confidence, and get used to today’s road conditions. The training is at your pace, with no pressure – just clear, supportive instruction.
  • Do you help with the full driving test preparation?
Yes. We offer Pre-Test Preparation sessions to help you build confidence and sharpen your riding technique. These sessions focus on test routes, key assessment areas, and correcting habits that might affect your performance.
  • Where are your training locations?
We currently offer motorcycle training in two key locations: Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath – Easily accessible from the Midlands, ideal for new and returning riders. Tullamore, Co. Offaly – Calm, spacious training environment perfect for all experience levels.

  • How long does it take to get a motorcycle learner permit?
The process typically takes 1 to 2 weeks, depending on appointment availability and document processing by the NDLS. Here’s a quick breakdown: Study for and pass the motorcycle theory test – you can book online and usually get a test within a few days. Apply for your learner permit on the NDLS website – you’ll need proof of ID, a completed eyesight report, and your PPS number. Receive your permit by post – most people get it within 7 to 10 working days after their application is approved. We recommend booking your theory test as early as possible to avoid delays.
  • Is there an exam at the end of the IBT course?
No, there is no formal exam at the end of each IBT module. However, you must demonstrate the necessary knowledge and riding skills to progress. Your instructor will assess your performance during the training and provide feedback.
  • What happens after I complete my IBT course?
Once you successfully complete all IBT modules, you’ll receive a certificate of satisfactory completion. This certificate, along with your learner permit, must be kept with you while riding. You’ll then need to wait at least 6 months before booking your full motorcycle driving test.
  • Can my IBT certificate expire?
Yes. Your IBT certificate is valid for 2 years. Within that time, you must either take your full driving test or apply for a full motorcycle licence. If it expires, you will need to repeat the IBT course.
  • What is Progressive Access?
Progressive Access allows you to upgrade to a higher category of motorcycle without taking another driving test – as long as you’ve held the lower category full licence for at least 2 years and complete the Module 5 progression IBT.
  • Can I use my IBT certificate to ride manual and automatic bikes?
Yes, but only within the category and transmission type you trained on. If you completed IBT on an automatic, you cannot ride a manual bike without passing a driving test on a manual or taking further training.
  • What if I lose my IBT certificate?
If lost, you can request a duplicate certificate from the RSA by submitting a declaration form from your local Garda station along with a €10 fee. IBT instructors cannot issue replacements.
